    Hand-Painted Kitchen Makers UK

Hand-painted kitchens are finished in the workshop or on-site by specialist painters using brush, roller, or spray techniques — as distinct from factory-applied spray finishes. The result is a quality of surface and depth of colour that machine finishing rarely replicates. Most hand-painted kitchens are built on in-frame or Shaker carcasses, with the finish applied to solid timber doors and frames. Prices for full hand-painted projects typically start from £20,000 and can exceed £100,000 at the bespoke end. A meaningful distinction for buyers: some makers offer hand-painting as a finish option; others — such as The Painted Kitchen Company and Cheshire Kitchen Studio — treat it as their defining specialism.

Hand-painted kitchens are defined not by a cabinet style but by a finishing process — one that takes longer, costs more, and produces a result that no factory spray line can replicate. The depth and texture of a hand-applied finish is what buyers are paying for.

    What Is a Hand-Painted Kitchen?

Hand-painting is a finishing discipline rather than a structural one. The term refers to kitchens where the paint is applied by brush or roller in the maker’s workshop — rather than sprayed in a factory environment. The distinction matters because the results are genuinely different: hand-applied paint has a slight texture, a depth, and a softness of edge that characterises the best painted furniture of any period.

The process typically involves multiple stages: primer, undercoats, a fine sand between each coat, and a topcoat applied with a quality brush that leaves a deliberate, controlled texture rather than the glassy uniformity of a spray finish. Many makers use chalk-based or limewash paints for specific projects, which have their own characteristic depth. Others prefer an eggshell oil-based finish for its durability and subtle sheen.

Hand-painted finishes work across cabinet styles — Shaker, in-frame, Georgian, or contemporary — and across a very wide colour palette. It is worth asking any maker to show examples of their painted work in person before commissioning, because the quality range in this category is wider than almost any other.

    Hand-Painted Kitchen Questions

    What is a hand-painted kitchen?
A hand-painted kitchen is one where the paint finish is applied by brush or roller in the maker's workshop, rather than sprayed in a factory. The process produces a subtle texture and depth of colour that cannot be replicated by machine spray lines.
How many coats of paint does a hand-painted kitchen receive?
Quality hand-painted kitchens typically receive between four and eight coats — primer, two or three undercoats (sanded between each), and one or two topcoats. The layering process creates a depth and durability that single-coat factory finishes cannot match.
Is a hand-painted finish more durable than a sprayed finish?
Not inherently — durability depends on the paint type, number of coats, and preparation quality. However, hand-painted kitchens are easier to touch up and refinish over time. A brush-applied finish can be repaired in situ, whereas a factory spray finish often requires the door to be returned to the workshop.
